Portable Power Stations vs Solar Generators: A Comprehensive Guide

By Brian aka WifiBum •  Updated: 09/19/23 •  7 min read •

Portable power stations and solar-powered generators are the most popular power backup solutions.

From powering the small essentials like our phones, cameras, laptops, to full home back up (refrigerators, AC, sump pumps, etc), we all rely on electricity.

My guide will describe the differences between a portable power station and a solar generator, the pros and cons, how they work, and which one to choose.

What Is a Portable Power Station?

A portable power station is a high-capacity battery that stores and delivers electricity. A portable power station allows you to charge and power devices when unconventional power sources fail or are unavailable.

Portable power stations are much larger than traditional power banks used to charge your phone once or twice. Portable power stations start around 250Wh and go up to 2000Wh+ and weigh between 8lbs and 40+lbs.

The portable power station market is growing each year as the technology gets better and they become less expensive to produce.

How Does a Portable Power Station Work?

Portable power stations function as mobile energy storage. At its core, it’s about energy storage and redistribution.

Rechargeable Battery Pack

In a portable power station, large-capacity batteries store electricity for later use.

Commonly used battery chemistries include NMC (Nickel Manganese Cobalt) and LiFePO4 (Lithium Iron Phosphate).

While NMC batteries tend to have higher energy density and are lighter, LiFePO4 power stations are known for their long cycle life and enhanced safety features.

Variety of Ports

From USB-A, USB-C, to AC, they are equipped with multiple ports to cater to different devices. The output of these ports will vary between power stations as well (ie: how fast they can charge a phone).

Inverter

The inverter converts stored DC power to AC, making it compatible with most electronic appliances. However, inverters are not 100% efficient, and each power station will vary in its efficiency. Better power stations have better inverters, but many fall in the range of 80 to 85% efficient (ie: 1024 capacity is really ~870Wh capacity if using AC power).

What Is a Solar Powered Generator?

Solar generators harness the sun’s energy and store it for future use. They are similar to portable power stations, but some cross into each category.

However, solar-powered generators are larger and primarily used with solar panels as their primary input.

While many portable power stations can also use solar, when people refer to “solar-powered generators” they typically refer to units with 2000Wh capacity or more.

How Does a Solar Powered Generator Work?

Solar powered generators have several key components.

Solar Panels

Solar panels capture sunlight and convert the photons into electricity to be stored in the battery.

Battery

The battery stores the energy to be used at a future date. Solar generators differ in sizes and the ability of how much solar input they can handle. Similar to portable power stations, these batteries can be NMC or LiFePO4.

As of 2023, the trend is leaning towards LiFePO4 due to their longer lifespan, although they are heavier.

Inverter

The inverter transitions the retained DC energy to AC, ensuring it aligns with the requirements of numerous electronic devices. While no inverter boasts complete efficiency, the percentage differs across various solar generators. Top-tier solar generators feature superior inverters, yet a majority exhibit an efficiency spectrum between 80 to 85%. For instance, a 1024Wh capacity might realistically offer around ~870Wh when tapping into AC power.

The Best Solar Generators

The market offers a plethora of options. The best units are those that provide an optimal balance between solar input, battery capacity, and output options. For a detailed list, check our specialized article.

What Are the Differences Between a Portable Power Station and a Solar Powered Generator?

There are several key differences between portable power stations and solar generators.

Power Storage vs. Power Generation

Power stations primarily store energy, while solar generators both generate (via solar panels) and store.

This distinction means that power stations, in essence, act like ‘batteries’, storing energy from another source, while solar generators are ‘producers’, capturing and storing their own energy.

Types of Power Sources

Power stations can be charged via multiple sources, whereas solar generator users primarily depend on sunlight but can often be charged traditionally as well.

The Convenience of Portability

While both are portable, power stations are generally more compact, whereas solar generators might need larger solar arrays, making them bulkier. In addition, solar generator batteries may be so heavy that they need to be wheeled around rather than carried.

Recharging Options

Power stations offer versatile recharging, while solar generators may be used primarily with solar. However, most power stations and solar generators have the same recharging options.

When Should I Use a Portable Power Station vs Solar Generator?

Portable Power Stations for Camping

Portable power stations are great for camping. Many can be 10lbs or less, making them portable, convenient, and keep all your small electronics charged.

However, if you’re doing extended camping trips, a solar generator can provide that off-grid living experience while charging devices like phones, cameras, laptops, and more.

On the west coast, you’ll see solar generators being used much more than other areas in the U.S. due to the more reliable sunlight.

Home Backup Power

Portable power stations offer quick, plug-and-play backup solutions for homes, especially during short outages. Solar generators, with sufficient solar input, can provide longer backup durations and may be more relevant for long-term preppers.

In addition, consider a backup power for your sump pump. We had several floods growing up in the midwest due to this issue!

Outdoor Events

Solar generators can be great when hosting all-day events. For nighttime or indoor events, portable power stations are the way to go.

For tailgating, smaller portable power stations are the best choice.

Work Sites

For remote work sites without grid access, a solar generator can be invaluable, especially for powering tools and equipment over extended periods. A portable power station would be suitable for shorter-term needs or less intensive power demands.

This is my setup for working while camping off the grid.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Portable Solar Power Stations Worth It?

Absolutely! Power stations offer a clean, eco-friendly alternative to traditional generators, especially useful for short-term needs like camping trips, power outages, and more.

Which is Better Power Station or Generator?

It depends on your needs. If you prioritize consistent power and versatile recharging options, go for a power station. For long-term off-grid living, choose a solar generator.

Can Solar Generators Work Without Sunlight?

Yes, but with limitations. They rely on stored energy in batteries, which can deplete without adequate solar input. However, solar generators can also be charged in traditional ways such as using AC input.

Now that you have a clearer understanding of both portable power stations and solar generators, you can make an informed decision based on your needs. Whether you’re going camping, preparing for a power outage, or hosting an outdoor event, there’s a solution that’s right for you.
