Working from the backyard patio or while camping requires a comfortable outdoor office chair.
Ergonomics are an issue with most portable office chairs because they lack the structure of a more permanent solution.
I’ll review outside desk chair ideas for the porch, patio, backyard, and the great outdoors while camping.
Porch & Patio Desk Chair for Working from Home
You’ll want a comfortable and ergonomic chair for working at your outdoor desk.
You’ll want to look for weather-resistant materials like mesh, metal, or plastics that are designed to allow the chair to withstand outdoor weather conditions.
These are great all-around chairs. While they don’t have armrests, they look great for other occasions and are easily foldable for storing in the off-season.
These folding chairs can be used for your patio desk.
They have a matching outdoor dining table if you’re looking for one.
This chair makes it easy to have great posture and should be comfortable enough for several hours of outdoor home office work.
Portable Office Chair for Backyard
If you’re looking for a patio or backyard office chair and want multiple uses, you can look at using higher-end camp chairs. These will make working from home or working remotely while camping much more comfortable than the average chair.
Outdoor Office Desk Chair
Your outdoor office chair should have a firm bottom and firm armrests. The back of the chair should be close to a 90-degree angle like a normal office chair. This allows you to sit with proper posture and enjoy working from your backyard, patio, or even while camping.
This is the one design I have not tried, but I would highly consider it. It has a firm bottom and armrests that are wide enough not to dig into your forearm. Looks like a comfortable desk chair!
I currently use a similar chair for working remotely outside and in the backyard (except I hate the armrests, so I didn’t recommend it). My chair was discontinued, but it resembles this folding outdoor office chair. Notice how skinny the armrests are. It’s uncomfortable because your arm wants to fall off it, and it starts digging in.
Another outdoor desk chair is a KingCamp portable folding chair with lumbar support. It’s a great patio and lawn chair that can be used for working remotely outside. However, the seat is not as firm as the other options.
The benefits of using a camp chair for your outdoor desk are:
- Portable and easy
- Drys quickly vs other padded outdoor chairs
- Durable and rugged
The cons are
- Posture and bum support not as great as indoor office chairs
- Might sit too low for some outdoor desk/tables
Can You Use an Office Chair Outside?
If you have a nice working from home office chair, I would not recommend using it as an outdoor desk chair. Indoor chairs are not designed to withstand outdoor environments. Rain, wind, and UV from the sun can damage the chair.
Additionally, they aren’t great for uneven surfaces like grass or patios with cracks or designs.
